MOTION POETRY is an interactive research experiment which translates movement into text. All the poems you see are created only with a phone and its accelerometers.

Ecstasy

Just see the morning itself has come to sit in my spine shaking in delight. A grand sun much grander in splendour not even in the blue. Is bubbling over in laughter of each and every molecule of my existence. Bringing out dark green vibrations on the back of my palms and wrists. Eruptive delight sits on the skin thrilled in the vibrant hours playing violin inside me. Just look at the radiant eyes at their height, an expression of the dances of my being. To announce to the world through the bugle of hibiscus in my bone marrows. Upon the glorious pine trees in infinite twitter thousands and thousands of sparrows.

You can create your very own poem right now. All you have to do is visit this exact website with your smartphone. Go to the CREATE YOUR OWN tab and hit the GET STARTED button!

From the moment you hit the button you hear a sound and your timer with 22 seconds on the clock starts. Start dancing, shaking, moving however you want.

As soon as you hear the next sound your time is over and you need to wait a little while your poem is beeing written out of your movement data.

And there you go: Here‘s your finished poem. As with all the other poems you‘re able to hit the underlined words and see how your movements got analyzed and translated to words. You can now title it, save the link and share it with your friends.

MOTION POETRY is an interactive research experiment which translates movement into text. All the poems you see are created only with a phone and its accelerometers.

HOW DOES IT WORK? As you already saw in the ‚Create your own‘ Tab, making a new poem is only possible with the mobile version of this page using the recording tool. After you finished your 22 second performance your movement data is collected and split up into seven movements, all lasting three seconds. The program then analyzes each of the movements and looks for qualities that apply to the specific motion. Based on Labans ‚Dynamic Qualities of the movement‘ we chose following categories to base the qualities on:

Weight strong / light
Time sudden / sustained + fast / slow
Flow bound / free
Space direct / indirect

There‘s a individual pool of words for each quality, these words are all somehow connected to the quality itself. Some more direct, some more abstract. For example the quality is strong, you have words like ‚hard, muscles, alligator, hunt, brutal, building, vodka‘ and so on. So after the movement is annotated with one or more of the qualities, our program puts random words from the attached pools into a pre given grammar. These are the actual significant underlined words you see in the poems, which lead the meaning of the sentence in the direction of the quality. The rest of the sentence is then filled up with other, all random words. Like that, movement after movement your poem is put together and the translation from motion to poetry is made.
